India’s first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup triumph has drawn global applause, with Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai calling the nail-biting final “a moment that will inspire a whole generation.”
Reacting on X after India’s 52-run win over South Africa in Navi Mumbai, Pichai wrote: “That was a nail-biting women’s world cup cricket final, memories of 1983 and 2011 indeed. Congrats to Team India, am sure will inspire a whole generation. Great tournament from South Africa too!”
The victory capped a remarkable campaign for Harmanpreet Kaur’s squad, which entered the semifinals as the last qualifier before stunning defending champion Australia and then outplaying South Africa in the final.
Shefali Verma and Deepti Sharma star in historic win
Opening batter Shafali Verma, drafted in as injury cover, smashed a career-best 87 off 78 balls and later chipped in with two wickets to earn Player of the Match honors. All-rounder Deepti Sharma delivered a match-winning spell of 5-39 and scored a vital 58, finishing the tournament with 22 wickets and 215 runs to claim Player of the Tournament.
India posted 298-7, the second-highest total in a World Cup final, before bowling out South Africa for 246. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt fought hard with a century but fell as Sharma sealed the win.
‘Now we want to make this a habit’
Reflecting on the breakthrough, captain Harmanpreet Kaur said: “We were waiting for this moment, and now this moment has come. Now we want to make this a habit.”
The win makes India the first new women’s world champion since 2000, rewriting cricket history and igniting celebrations across the country and beyond.
