It may have taken Sridevi five years to return to the big screen but she is back with a bang in the new release Mom, directed by Ravi Udyawar that also starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna. The film saw a decent opening on Friday and its business grew 65 percent on the second day.
According to a Box Office India report, Mom earned Rs 3 crore on Friday, and Rs 4.75 crore on Saturday. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that the film added Rs 6.42 crore in its wallet on Sunday, taking the three day total to Rs 14.17 crore.
Although the weekend collection was low at Rs 14 crore net plus, it may give the movie a chance to score on the weekdays. Mom is doing well in the five big metros (Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Bangalore) and it will be a wait-and-watch situation whether the film can hold or grow its business from Monday onward.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that Mom’s business increased in key multiplexes and the combined growth for the film in these theatre chains was 83.54 percent. PVR earned Rs 72 lakh on Friday and Rs 1.27 crore on Saturday, Inox collected Rs 44 lakh on Friday and Rs 83 lakh on Saturday, Cinepolis added Rs 28 lakh on Friday and Rs 50 lakh on Saturday to its business, Carnival received Rs 14 lakh on Friday and Rs 30 lakh on Saturday.
Among the new Indian releases, Mom ranks second in the US with USD 250,000 collections. The other two films are Guest in London and Ninnu Kori.
Film expert Komal Nahata believes that Mom will appeal to the audience and stand strong at the box office despite its slow start and high cost of production, which is Rs 41 crore. Nahata expects that word of mouth will work in the film's favour.
