McDonald's doesn't buy potatoes from local farmers: BJP

Continuing to support its stand against FDI in retail, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday targeted fast food chain McDonald's and said they do not source potatoes from Indian farmers for its fries. During a debate on FDI in retail, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said, "Government should ask McDonald's where does it source potatoes for its fries from. McDonald's never buys potatoes from local Indian farmers, they say the size of potatoes is very small here," Sushma Swaraj said.

Govt confident that motion against FDI will be defeated Sushma also said that FDI in retail will lead to unemployment and the supermarkets will pay farmers and employees less. Speaking against FDI in Lok Sabha, Sushma also said, "Competition is in the interest of consumers, monopoly is not." It is a huge day for Parliament as the Lok Sabha entered into a debate on Tuesday on FDI in multi-brand retail. The debate is being carried out under rule 184, which allows voting. The Congress is putting up a brave front saying it's confident that it has the numbers and can pull through this.
