In a bizarre and unsettling discovery, a Chinese couple found themselves unwittingly consuming toilet water for an astonishing six months. The couple, identified only as Tan and his girlfriend, began facing mysterious health issues shortly after moving into their new apartment in Beijing, raising concerns that led to a shocking revelation about the source of their water, Jam Press reported.
The ordeal began in May when Tan and his girlfriend started experiencing health problems, including an unexplained cough, hair loss, and acne.
Suspicions arose when Tan realized he hadn't paid a water bill for half a year, yet water continued to flow into their $1,400-a-month (Rs 1.16 lakh) rental. Tan then conducted water meter tests, revealing an anomaly — the meter didn't increase when water was used in the apartment.
Alarmed by the unusual findings, the couple sought professional help from a plumber. The revelation was nothing short of horrifying — an unnoticed extra pipe interconnected the toilet and tap water pipes. For six months, every drop used in the apartment, from drinking to bathing and cooking, had been sourced from the toilet.
Despite the immediate rectification of the plumbing issue by the plumber, the couple claimed adverse effects on their health persisted for half a year. Now seeking monetary damages from the rental firm, Tan argues that they were never informed about the unconventional water source before moving in.
In response, the unidentified rental company presented a counterargument, suggesting that some tenants opted for water from a nearby well. While they contend that the well water passed quality tests in March, it is allegedly intended solely for toilets and plant watering. Regardless, Tan insists they were never informed of this arrangement, and negotiations with the rental company are ongoing.
