Ashneer Grover, known for his sharp demeanour on Shark Tank India season 1, has sparked outrage after demanding his segment be removed from a comedy roast show on YouTube.
The controversy erupted when comedian Aashish Solanki, host of "Pretty Good Roast," revealed that Grover requested his portion be cut from the episode after struggling with the jokes directed at him.
Solanki, in the roast that premiered just weeks ago on YouTube, said: "TV pe log talent dikhaane jaate hai yeh aaukat dikha kar aa gaya (People appear on TV to showcase their talent, but he revealed showed his status). Apni company se kaun nikala jata hai yaar (Who gets kicked out of their own company)?"
The video, that almost ends with welcoming Grover on the show, abruptly cuts to Solanki announcing that the segment with the guest has been cut. He didn't name Grover directly, but it was evident from the jokes and the introduction he was talking about the "Doglapan" author.
He detailed the challenges of producing a comedy show and the unexpected turn of events following the filming. "Doston apna show banane ke bohot challenges hote hain mujhe abhi abhi pata chala. Aur pata yeh chala ki ye jo humne episode shoot kiya tha iske baad uske baad hame hamare guest ne bataya ki ye waale jokes wo bilkul nahi jhel paaye hai. Toh ab hume sadly unka poora part kaatna padega (There are several challenges in running a show, and I realise it now. The guest couldn’t take the jokes, so we had to cut his portion),” he said.
The video, which was initially removed from YouTube, went viral on X (formerly Twitter), amassing over over 7 lakh views and igniting a wave of criticism against Grover. One user commented, "Why did he even go there if he can’t handle it and has such a fragile ego? The other person spent a lot of money on the show, and it isn’t sponsored by anyone. The roasters gave their valuable time and effort to write jokes."
Another user wrote: "Ashneer Grover insulted so many people in his life and when it came to his roast which he agreed upon consciously, he decided to get it removed and didn't even let Aashish Solanki to post edited version of it. UTTER DOGLAPAN."
Solanki, attempting to clarify the situation, posted a note on Instagram. "Ep 5 of Pretty Good Roast hata diya hai doston. Legal battle ladne ka paisa nahi hai. Sab show pe laga diya tha (We have removed episode 5 of the show. I have no money to fight a legal battle. I have put all my money in the show.) The response on previous episodes led us to believe our audiences were ready for roast humour. However, it seems that some, especially those in power, are not quite there yet," he explained. He also thanked his audience for their understanding and support, promising future episodes.
This incident comes in the wake of Ashneer Grover's controversial exit from BharatPe in March 2022, where he was ousted as managing director following accusations of extensive financial misconduct involving his family.
Solanki, who rose to fame after winning Amazon Prime’s "Comicstaan Season 3," now faces the challenge of continuing his show without legal entanglements and maintaining his creative integrity as the backlash against Grover brews on social media.
Grover has not yet responded on social media on the matter.
