On Thursday evening, the ongoing wedding season triggered extensive traffic jams across Delhi. Certain commuters reported a congestion on Mukarba Chowk flyover along the highway from Narela to bypass.
"Standing in traffic for past 40 minutes in Bawana,” a commuter wrote on X. Heavy volume of traffic was also reported in the IIT area of South Delhi and the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
Commuters have been advised to make use of public transports and park vehicles only at designated spots. “The traffic volume was higher than usual and it is expected to be the same for next few days due to peak wedding season,” a traffic police officer from the Gurgaon wing said.
According to an estimate, around 15,000 weddings took place in Delhi on Thursday. Traffic jams were caused owing to the proximity of wedding venues to Dwarka, Dhaula Kuan, Chattarpur and Mehrauli-Gurgaon road. There are also a number of banquet halls in Rajokri. The congestion started around 5.30 pm and was present till late evening.
Meanwhile, around 35 lakh weddings are set to take place between November 23 and December 15 in India. According to a survey by Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the extravagant festivities are expected to generate a whopping revenue of 4.25 lakh crore, which will result in a significant economic boost.
