WEF lists top 10 emerging technologies of 2023: Flexible batteries, sustainable aviation fuel at the forefront

A World Economic Forum (WEF) report released on June 26 has listed the technologies that have the best chance of making the world a better place in the next three to five years.

Wearable plant sensors, sustainable aviation fuel, generative AI and flexible batteries are among the technologies featured in the Top 10 Emerging Technologies Report 2023.  The WEF report, produced in collaboration with Frontiers, says these cutting-edge technologies have the potential to bring about significant advancements in various fields. The report provides a qualitative assessment of the potential impacts of each technology on individuals, environment, economic growth, and various industries.

The research report looks at a number of future technologies that have enormous potential, including AI-enabled healthcare delivery, flexible batteries powering wearable medical devices, flexible circuits with brain interfaces, virtual shared spaces for mental health assistance, modified viruses for health enhancement, generative AI to create original content, and spatial omics offering a molecular-level knowledge of biological systems.

Jeremy Jurgens, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum and Director of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, asserts that new technologies will bring about industry disruptions, economic growth, improve livelihoods, and protect environment.
