Indian Institute of Management Lucknow, one of the top five business schools in India, is struggling to place about 72 of its students, sources confirmed to Moneycontrol.
This comes at a time when a fall in hiring sentiments in India Inc amid a poor macro-environment has impacted placement records of many such institutions across the country.
According to sources, students that are yet to be placed include graduates from esteemed institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (BITS), Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), among others. Some of them are also Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Accountant professionals, added the sources.
The request for a support in placements arrived in a WhatsApp group joined by alumni of the 2011 batch of IIM Lucknow.

“We are writing to address the current situation regarding unplaced students from our batch. Currently, 72 talented individuals are seeking employment opportunities. We are reaching out to our alumni of the 2011 Batch for assistance. We understand that everyone has unique connections and networks, and we are hopeful that you may be able to help in placing our students,” the message said.
The note went on to mention that the institution is seeking support in maintaining the legacy of IIM Lucknow's 100 percent placement record.
The issue first came to light when the edtech entrepreneur Ravi Handa took to Twitter to share a screenshot of the message and said, “It isn’t about 5-10 people but 72 candidates at IIM-L do not have a job. Imagine the status at other B-schools.”
Moneycontrol reached out to the placement office at IIM Lucknow who did not want to comment on the story.
An alumnus of IIM Lucknow told Moneycontrol, requesting anonymity, that the placement process which generally concludes in the first three days seems to have spilled out this year. To be sure, he added that the message above first hit the group over 12 days back.
Top B schools, this year are hence rolling out their placements for months till the last student of the batch is placed and hence are trying all tricks in the book.
This comes at a time when major recruiters have sat out the campus placement season resulting in this year, turning out to be one of the most difficult ever for placements at the top IIMs of Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode, among other B schools.
