The Lok Sabha slipped into a din on February 6 after DMK member TR Baalu called BJP minister L Murugan “unfit to be an MP, minister, and unfit for politics”.
The face-off unfolded during the question hour when Baalu raised a question and sought a reply from the government and was interrupted by Murugan.
Irked by the minister’s response, Baalu sought Speaker Om Birla’s intervention to let him speak freely. “You are unfit to be a Member of Parliament. You are unfit to be a minister also,” he lashed out at Murugan. “You are unfit to be in politics also.”
Soon after his remarks, BJP ministers Pralhad Joshi and Arjun Ram Meghwal stood up and demanded an apology from him. “TR Baalu has used unparliamentary language against our minister, who comes from the Scheduled Caste community. He must apologise as he has insulted the Dalit community,” said Arjun Ram Meghwal.
Members from both the treasury benches and opposition exchanged words, and members of the opposition INDIA bloc staged a walkout from the House.
Later, outside the Parliament, Baalu said that A Raja had earlier raised a question that Tamil Nadu has not received the National Disaster Relief Fund despite Chief Minister MK Stalin making the demand of Rs 37,000 crore.
“Our demand has not been fulfilled, and I raised the same issue again. I was seeking a response from the concerned minister, and L Murugan interrupted me. I said he is unfit because he doesn’t understand the problem being faced by our state,” Baalu said.
