BSP extends support to BJP-led NDA's presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu

Murmu on June 24 filed her nomination papers for the July 18 presidential election, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi handing over the set of papers to Returning Officer PC Mody.

The BSP on June 25 extended its support to the BJP-led NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu, who is likely to be the first tribal leader and the second woman to occupy the post.

Murmu on June 24 filed her nomination papers for the July 18 presidential election, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi handing over the set of papers to returning officer PC Mody.

Murmu, 64, if elected, will become the second female and first tribal president of India. She was born in Mayubhanj, Odisha, and graduated from Rama Devi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, following which, she began working as an assistant professor at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre. Murmu also worked as a junior assistant at the irrigation department of the government of Odisha, before joining the BJP in 1997.

In the same year, she was elected the councillor of Rairangpur.
