The DMK which has 18 MPs in the Lok Sabha has withdrawn support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government over the US-sponsored resolution on alleged war crimes by the Sri Lankan forces. The UPA Government is now reduced to minority.
DMK chief M Karunanidhi, as well as his political rival, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, have been demanding amendments to the UN resolution against Sri Lanka. The two parties, the DMK and the AIADMK, have been demanding that India vote in favour of the resolution. They have also demanded introduction of the words 'Eelam' and 'genocide' in the US-sponsored resolution. They have also asked for an international probe into the matter.
Party positions in the Lok Sabha which has 539 MPs at present as four seats are vacant. The half-way mark is 270. UPA has 250 seats -
Congress- 202
DMK- 18
NCP - 9
RLD - 5
Others - 16 Outside support for UPA totals 49 including -
SP- 22
BSP - 21
RJD - 3
JDS - 3
UPA + outside support equals 299
With DMK deciding to withdraw from the UPA, its strength reduces by 18 to 232.
UPA + outside support in this case equals 271.
