Hajj is of great significance for Muslims as it is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is believed that every Muslim who is physically and economically capable should mandatorily perform Hajj at least once in their lives, making it a sacred experience for pilgrims. (Image: Reuters)
The pilgrims started their journey by attaining a state of spiritual purity known as "ihram." The pilgrims travelled between two hills within Mecca's Grand Mosque, the world's biggest mosque, and conducted the Tawaf, circling the black, cube-shaped Kaaba seven times. Men wore basic white terrycloth attire, while women wore little makeup and covered their hair. (Image: Reuters)
The pilgrims travelled to Mina, where they will live in one of the world's largest tent cities after completing the traditional circle around the Kaaba in the previous days. This would be followed by praying throughout the day and night before heading to Mount Arafat. The Hajj's final three days overlap with the celebratory Eid al-Adha holiday. (Image: Reuters)
The Grand Mosque is surrounded by security forces providing protection and the nearby streets are filled with pilgrims who can be seen praying in colourful carpets. While some pilgrims splash water over themselves, others can be seen with umbrellas to beat the scorching heat. Inside the Grand Mosque, thousands of paramedics were on standby to help in case of any health emergency like dehydration or sunstroke. (Image: Reuters)
