Comment - Don’t entrust the fate of banks to the government

The banks lent out money irresponsibly because India’s politicians in power thought that they could use the banks to win favours from industrialists.

On December 27 last year, CARE Ratings published a very interesting document on NPAs with a global perspective. The paper showed quite clearly the precarious position of India’s banks. CARE provided a sampling of countries which had extremely low NPAs and countries that had extremely high NPAs. Obviously, there is no prize for guess where India falls.  It belongs to the clutch of countries which sport the highest NPAs (see chart).

When juxtaposed against two other numbers, one thing becomes clear. India’s government should not be trusted with more powers to manage banks. The three numbers begin to tell you a lot about the way countries think.
