Thane constituency assembly is one of the 288 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of Maharashtra, which is headed for polls on November 20. Thane is located near Mumbai.
Thane Assembly Constituency demographics
It is an unreserved seat. It has approximately 3.36 lakh voters. Muslims, Scheduled Castes and tribal communities hold substantial vote shares in Thane. Also, there are dominant populations of Patil, Yadav, and Christian voters, as per reports.
Thane Assembly Constituency Candidates
Once a Shiv Sena bastion, Thane seat is now held by BJP since 2014. A fierce battle is all set to take place between Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Rajan Vichare and BJP's Sanjay Kelkar. Third candidate is Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's Avinash Jadhav. Thane constituency is a pivotal seat and it will be interesting to see if BJP can claim a hattrick or can Shiv Sena reclaim their stronghold or it will be a surprise altogether and MNS wins this one?
The current MLA is BJP's Sanjay Kelkar and the seat has been with the saffron party since 2014.
Thane Assembly Election Results
In the beginning, Congress held the seat for several years after which Shiv Sena established a stronghold from the 1990s. Until 2014 when BJP claimed the victory and then again it won in 2019.
In 2019 assembly elections, Kelkar won by around 92,000 votes. He defeated MNS' candidate Avinash Jadhav who got almost 72,o00 votes.
In 2014 elections, Kelkar defeated Shiv Sena (then undivided) candidate Ravindra Phatak with a decent margin. Sanjay Kelkar got around 70,000 votes while Phatak got less than 60,000 votes.
The current chief minister Eknath Shinde won in 2004 assembly elections.

Polls in Maharashtra will be held in a single phase for all 288 seats. Thane assembly constituency will vote on November 20. Counting of votes will be held on November 23.
