Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra breached the 90m mark during the men's javelin throw event at the Doha Diamond League on May 16 and became the third Asian to achieve the feat.
Congratulating the star javelin thrower on his achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it's a spectacular feat. He praised the 27-year-old for his relentless dedication and discipline.
"A spectacular feat! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for breaching the 90m mark at Doha Diamond League 2025 and achieving his personal best throw. This is the outcome of his relentless dedication, discipline and passion," the Prime Minister posted on X, formerly Twitter.
India is elated and proud, PM Modi added.
Chopra finally breached the elusive 90m frontier with a 90.23m throw but had to settle for the second place behind Germany's Julian Weber in a dramatic contest at the Doha leg of the prestigious Diamond League Meeting series.
"I am very happy to have breached the 90m mark but it's a bitter-sweet experience," Neeraj Chopra, whose earlier personal best and national record was 89.94m, said. "I believe I can throw farther than this in the coming events. We will work on some aspects and will throw 90m plus again this season," he added.
He first competed in the Doha Diamond League in 2018 when he finished fourth with a best throw of 87.43m.
It was Weber's first 90m-plus effort as well. With this, he became the 26th javelin thrower to breach the coveted mark. His effort was the world leading mark this season so far.
