Priyanka Gandhi's electoral debut carries 3 big messages

Optics & continuity: Priyanka Gandhi's roadshow in Wayanad on Wednesday was high on both optics and substance. The fanfare signalled a metaphorical coronation of sorts for Priyanka, who is fairly confident of a victory in the November 13 bypolls. Rahul Gandhi comfortably won the Wayanad seat in the recent Lok Sabha elections but chose to represent Rae Bareli - another seat he won - in the lower house. By replacing Rahul with another prized Gandhi from the seat, Congress is hoping to hit the bull's eye in more ways than one — a) by showing loyalty towards the people of Wayanad who placed their faith in Rahul in back-to-back Lok Sabha polls; and b) giving an easy glidepath to Priyanka who has been waiting for the right moment to officially enter the political arena.

Timing & brand value: Gandhi family is the axis of Congress and forms the top tier in the so-called high command. But Congress's depleting fortunes since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls raised uncomfortable questions about the effectiveness of the Gandhi leadership. A group of dissenters (G23) even wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi proposing structural changes within the party. The unofficial message was to give greater say to non-Gandhi leaders in the party. The family has since been trying hard to protect the Gandhi name in the face of tough questions, both from outside and within.

Rahul Gandhi underwent a political makeover and undertook two padyatras across India to reignite the cadre. Sonia took a step back, at least in the public eye, and allowed Gandhi family loyalist Mallikarjun Kharge to take over the reins. The efforts culminated in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where Congress managed to nearly double its 2019 tally. The results gave much-needed political momentum to the family and allowed Congress to credit Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra for the revival of the party. With Priyanka making her electoral debut now — rather than 5 years ago — the party seems to be striking when the iron's hot. After all, in politics, timing is everything. Moreover, if she wins, all three Gandhis will be in Parliament at the same time - which will further reinforce the family's brand value.

The legacy: When Priyanka Gandhi first stepped into the spotlight in the late 1990s, many immediately drew comparisons to her grandmother Indira Gandhi. With her short hair and a charming smile, she bore a striking resemblance to the former Prime Minister. Party leaders, poll pundits and even rivals have long prophesied Priyanka's political entry. It seemed axiomatic anyway. However, Priyanka resisted entering politics for many years. In 2019, there was widespread speculation that she would be Congress's candidate to challenge PM Modi in Varanasi, but the much-anticipated entry never materialised. Indira Gandhi joined politics in early 30s and became a Rajya Sabha member in her late 40s. Her mother Sonia entered politics in her early 50s and became a Lok Sabha member at 53. Priyanka, 52, seems to be on the right track to carry forward the party's matriarchal legacy. But with Rahul Gandhi still the posterboy of the party, it will be interesting to see how Priyanka's political future unfolds.
