ONGC helicopter makes emergency landing in Arabian Sea; all 9 onboard rescued

A helicopter of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), carrying seven passengers and two pilots, met with a mishap on June 28 in the Arabian Sea.

The chopper made an emergency landing near ONGC’s Sagar Kiran rig in the Mumbai High offshore oilfield, located off the west coast of Mumbai city, the state-run oil exploration firm said in an update.

All nine persons onboard have been rescued, news agency PTI reported, adding that the Indian Navy and Coast Guard had joined the rescue operations.

The chopper was attempting to land at the rig, located some 50 nautical miles from the Mumbai coast, when the incident took place, news agency PTI reported. About 1.5 km from the landing zone on the rig, the chopper fell into the sea, it added, citing inputs received from an official. The circumstances that led to the incident were not immediately clear.
