At least one person has been confirmed dead and 25 others injured after 11 coaches of the Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derailed near Nergundi station in Cuttack district on Sunday, according to a report by Times of India.
The incident took place at approximately 11:54 am in the Cuttack-Nergundi railway section of the Khurda Road division under East Coast Railway (ECoR). Senior railway officials, including the General Manager of ECoR and the DRM of Khurda Road, arrived at the scene. Accident relief and medical trains were also sent to the location, as per an official statement from ECoR.
A statement from Indian Railways read, "11 coaches of the 12551 Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC Superfast Express derailed near Nergundi Station in the Cuttack-Nergundi Railway Section at approximately 11:54 am on March 30, 2025 (Sunday). No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far."
Railway officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) for Khurda Road and the General Manager of East Coast Railway, have arrived at the scene. An accident relief and medical train have been dispatched to assist. "Efforts are being made to transport stranded passengers to their destinations," said the Railway authorities.
Ashok Kumar Mishra, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of East Coast Railway, confirmed that resources have been mobilized, and the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and fire services have been alerted. "A relief train has been sent to the site, and our on-ground teams are also present," he added.
An ECoR spokesperson also said, "A special train is being arranged to transport stranded passengers to their destination. We have issued helpline numbers for train passengers and their families. Help desks have also been set up at Bhubaneswar, Bhadrak, and Cuttack railway stations."
