Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah’s cryptic post shared on X on Tuesday night has caught the attention of internet users. His post featured a meme of Harry Potter’s Professor Severus Snape saying, “I can’t take any more of this” -- with the caption featuring a ‘peeking eye’ emoji.
The post set off speculations over what the chief minister could be referring too, especially amid speculation over statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
“Statehood tomorrow?” a user replied on his post, while another said: “No statehood. Sit down and enjoy the mayorship.”
One user asked: “Why other CMs are not as cool as him?". Another predicted: “No statehood but administration rules."
Earlier, reports suggested that the central government could move a bill in the Lok Sabha, aimed at restroring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood on Wednesday, August 20. However, there was no official statement on the same.
Later, government sources told India Today that no specific proposals regarding Jammu and Kashmir would be brought before Parliament on Wednesday.
On Independence Day, Abdullah had said he was paying a political price for pinning his hopes on the country's democracy and the central government for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's rights, including statehood. The chief minister said that though he did not have much expectations, he was led to believe that it might happen after all.
"I had no expectations but I was being constantly told that the documents are ready and now just the announcement is to be made. But the announcement never came. The ray of hope is fading, but we will not give up," Abdullah said.
The chief minister said that in spite of the problem of dual power centres in a Union Territory, his government has done a lot of work over the last 10 months.
"It would be wrong to say that we did nothing in the (last) 10 months. We passed a resolution for restoration of special status in the legislative assembly, we passed a resolution for restoration of statehood," he said.
In the first week of August, Abdullah posted another cryptic message on X, expressing optimism about 'something positive' for the union territory during Parliament's monsoon session.
“I’ve heard every possible permutation & combination about what to expect in J&K tomorrow so let me stick my neck out and say nothing will happen tomorrow - fortunately nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either. I’m still optimistic about something positive for J&K in this monsoon session of Parliament but not tomorrow. And no, I haven’t had any meetings or conversations with people in Delhi,” he wrote.
The monsoon session of Parliament ends on August 21.
