BSP supremo Mayawati on Monday recalled the infamous guest house incident of 1995 to launch a fierce attack on the Samajwadi Party and Congress.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said that despite being in power at the Centre, Congress did not come to her aid when Samajwadi Party workers carried out a "deadly attack" on her in 1995.
In a series of posts on X, Mayawati recalled two particular instances to question the Congress's "intentions".
"The SP had carried out a deadly attack on me on June 2, 1995, after the BSP withdrew its support, then why does Congress never speak on this? The Congress government at the Centre during that time also did not fulfil its responsibility on time," Mayawati said.
"Even when Kanshi Ram ji was in a serious condition and hospitalised, the home minister had to be reprimanded and the opposition also gheraoed the Parliament, only after that did the Congress government take action," she said in Hindi.
"Because at that time the central Congress government's intentions had also become bad, which after some untoward incident wanted to run its government from behind the scenes by imposing president's rule in Uttar Pradesh, whose conspiracy was foiled by BSP," Mayawati further claimed.
The BSP chief went on to praise the BJP for saving her from the "criminal elements" in the SP.
"The entire opposition, including BJP, fulfilled its duty in saving me from the criminal elements of SP in the name of humanity and humaneness. But why does Congress keep having trouble with this from time to time? People should be aware of it," she said.
Mayawati added that BSP has been advocating for a caste census for years and has put pressure on both the Congress and BJP governments at the Centre.
The remark comes in the backdrop of Congress pushing for a caste census.
Mayawati added: "But after the caste census, will the Congress be able to ensure the reasonable rights of SC, ST and OBC? Those who are still silent on the issue of classification and creamy layer in SC/ST reservation should answer."
The fresh salvo comes three days after the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief expressed her gratitude to Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav for his stance on the "objectionable comments" made by a BJP MLA against her during a TV debate.
What was 1995 UP guest house case?
In 1993, then SP chief Mulayam Yadav formed an alliance with BSP founder Kanshi Ram ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections to deny BJP a shot at power. The two parties together formed the government with Mulayam Yadav becoming the chief minister. Congress also supported the government.
However, Mayawati withdrew support from the government and joined hands with BJP in 1995. Angry at her decision, several SP workers attacked Mayawati when she was holding a meeting with her party workers at a Lucknow guest house on June 2, 1995. The workers vandalised her room. Mayawati was allegedly abused and beaten up.
