Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked by a man during her weekly Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her official residence in Civil Lines on Wednesday morning.
The accused, identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, was apprehended by the Delhi Police shortly after the incident.
Who is Rajesh Bhai Sakariya?
The accused, Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, hails from Rajkot, Gujarat. According to the attacker's mother, the accused "was a dog/animal lover", as reported by News18.
She said that Rajesh was upset over the Supreme Court's recent ruling to round up stray dogs in Delhi NCR and shift them to shelters, NDTV reported citing sources.
Some accounts also claim that the 41-year-old accused went to the public meeting to seek the Chief Minister's help after his relative was arrested.
Sakariya, who was immediately taken into custody, is currently being interrogated by the Delhi Police, with investigators saying the accused arrived at the venue with documents linked to a relative currently lodged in Tihar Jail, News18 reported.
They added that Sakariya introduced himself before handing over a paper to the Chief Minister and then launched the assault. His political affiliations, if any, are yet to be verified.
