Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter Rohini Acharya on Saturday announced that she has quit politics and also severed ties with her family.
In a post on X, she said, "I’m quitting politics and I’m disowning my family. This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do. I’m taking all the blame."
Acharya, a doctor by profession, is a former member of the Lalu Yadav-led RJD. She had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Bihar's Saran constituency. However, she lost to BJP's Rajeev Pratap Rudy.
Ahead of the Bihar election, Acharya was reportedly unhappy over the expanding influence of Sanjay Yadav, the political adviser to Tejashwi Yadav, in the party and his proximity to the former Deputy Chief Minister.
Her remarks once again hinted at the widening rifts within the Yadav family. Earlier this year, the former Chief Minister expelled his eldest son, Tej Pratap Yadav, from the RJD and family for six years.
Acharya, who was in the news for donating a kidney to her father a few years ago, had unsuccessfully contested last year’s Lok Sabha polls from Saran.
It was speculated that she was "unhappy" over the expulsion of Tej Pratap Yadav, elder son of Prasad, from the party. However, during the assembly elections, she was seen campaigning for Tejashwi.
According to reports, she was among the first to publicly object when Sanjay was seen occupying Tejashwi’s seat in the "rath" during the "Voter Adhikar Yatra".
RJD insiders told News18 that so far there is no indication that Lalu Prasad or Rabri Devi have pressured Tejashwi to take action against Sanjay Yadav. Tej Pratap Yadav has long made Sanjay his punching bag, calling him a “Jaichand” who has hijacked the party.
The RJD's seat tally slipped to 24 from 75 in the Bihar assembly polls.
The ruling NDA decimated the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar on Friday to retain power, reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's enduring appeal and dealing a body blow to the Congress and ally RJD.
