J&K Assembly Election 2024 highlights: Jammu and Kashmir is holding the first phase of its assembly elections today, marking the region's first such vote in a decade. Over 23 lakh eligible voters will determine the outcome for 219 candidates vying for 24 assembly seats, including 90 independents. The election spans seven districts on either side of the Pir Panjal mountain range, covering eight seats in Jammu and 16 in the Kashmir valley.
With 23,27,580 eligible voters — 11,76,462 men, 11,51,058 women, and 60 third-gender individuals — 3,276 polling stations have been prepared, supported by 14,000 polling personnel. This election holds significance as the first since the abrogation of Article 370, drawing attention to voter turnout and its potential impact on the region's political landscape.
In the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, Mehbooba Mufti's PDP and Farooq Abdullah-led National Conference (NC) are key contenders in Kashmir, while Congress and BJP hold influence in the Jammu region. The NC has teamed up with Congress, with NC contesting 51 seats and Congress fielding candidates in 31 constituencies. The two allies will engage in a "friendly contest" in 5 seats, while both BJP and PDP are running independently.
The election process will unfold in three phases: the first on September 18, the second on September 25, and the third on November 1. Votes will be counted on October 8.
