IMD issues red alert for Mumbai amid weekend rainfall; weather to remain unstable through June 10

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and several regions across Maharashtra, warning of intense rainfall and thunderstorms expected over the weekend.

The alert comes as the region grapples with weak southwest monsoon winds and developing oligo cyclonic conditions, which are likely to trigger unstable weather patterns in the coming days.

IMD scientist Sushma Nair told news agency ANI, “The warning for the next 24 hours is a Yellow Alert. However, a Red Alert was previously issued for a heavy rainfall period expected to last 2 to 3 hours. Since that intense spell is now easing, it has been reclassified as a nowcast warning.”

According to the IMD, Mumbai and Pune can expect partly cloudy skies with a likelihood of moderate rain or thunderstorms through June 10. Light rain is forecast for the Mumbai-Santacruz area over the coming days.
