Following successful precision strikes against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, India has decided to ramp up procurement of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for its armed forces.
BrahMos, the missile system developed jointly by India and Russia, played a decisive role in targeting Pakistani military infrastructure during the four-day conflict in May.
Top defence sources told ANI that the defence ministry is expected to soon clear large-scale orders for the missile system during its coming high-level meeting.
The procurements will equip both the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force (IAF) with the latest variants of BrahMos.
The Navy is expected to arm its Veer-class warships with the sea-based version, while the IAF will integrate the air-launched variant with its fleet of Russian-origin Su-30 MKI fighter jets, ANI reported.
The push comes after the BrahMos missile was deployed extensively during the four-day Operation Sindoor, which followed the deadly April 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.
The missile was used to hit Pakistani air bases, some of which are still recovering from the damage inflicted by BrahMos.
"The world saw the capabilities of our indigenous weapons. Our Air Defence Systems, missiles, and drones have proved the strength of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', especially the BrahMos missiles," Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said while praising India’s defence capabilities during the conflict.

Military officials told ANI that the conflict marked the BrahMos missile’s first confirmed combat deployment.
The use of BrahMos during Operation Sindoor demonstrated its advanced features—including fire-and-forget capability, supersonic velocity, low radar cross-section, and pinpoint accuracy — making it difficult for enemy air defences to intercept.
Its effectiveness has also attracted significant international attention, with over a dozen countries reportedly expressing interest in purchasing the system.
Jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the BrahMos missile is one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world. It can be launched from land, sea, or air platforms and has a strike range of up to 450 km, with newer versions under development expected to surpass that range.
