Several parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed heavy rainfall for a second consecutive day on Friday, impacting normal life and leading to suspension of flight operations at Delhi airport's Terminal 1.
While rain has brought some respite from the scorching heat, it has also resulted in waterlogging in many parts of the national capital, with several vehicles submerged.
Videos shared by news agency ANI shows waterlogging in many areas including Safdarjung, Sarita Vihar, ITO, Moolchand, Azad Market, Raisina road, Udyog Vihar, Sheetla Mata road, among others. Commuters, especially those on two-wheelers, continue to struggle with waterlogged roads as shown in these videos.
Several people also took to social media and shared videos and photos of vehicles stuck in inundated roads and long traffic snarls.
In a post on X, the Delhi traffic police said, "Traffic is affected on Outer Ring Road in both carriageways from Shantivan towards ISBT and vice-versa due to waterlogging near Y-Point Saleemgarh and Nigambodh Ghat. Kindly plan your journey accordingly." Similar situation has been observed in Okhla underpass, Ghazipur border, Minto road from Kamla Market towards Connaught Place and vice-versa, among others.
Meanwhile, one person has died and six have been injured after a portion of the roof of the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed on cars, including taxis, amid heavy rain early Friday.
Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials said three fire tenders were rushed to Terminal-1 (T1) of the airport after a call about the incident was received around 5:30 am.
Flight departures at T1-- which handles only domestic flight operations -- have been reportedly suspended till 2 pm.
Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakhs to the next of kin of the deceased, who lost his life in the incident at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1. Meanwhile, the injured will get a compensation of Rs 3 lakhs.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government will hold an emergency meeting in the afternoon to take stock of the situation in the city amid rainfall. All Cabinet ministers and top officials are expected to attend the meeting that will be held at the Secretariat at 2 pm, officials told PTI.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rain is likely in the national capital over the weekend.
