BJP leader Amit Malviya has called for swift action after Congress MP KC Venugopal, late Sunday evening, claimed an Air India flight carrying several MPs nearly collided with another aircraft in Chennai.
Taking to microblogging site X, the BJP IT Cell chief writes, “This is extremely serious".
“If KC Venugopal claims an Air India flight had to abort landing in Chennai because another aircraft was on the runway and the airline immediately contradicts him, then one of them is misrepresenting facts", he noted.
He further stresses the critical nature of the situation, remarking, "Aviation safety is paramount… If the allegation is true, Chennai ATC and Air India have much to answer for. If not, Mr Venugopal should face consequences, including being put on a no-fly list for spreading falsehoods.”
The incident involves Flight AI 2455, operating from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi late Sunday evening, which was diverted to Chennai due to what Air India described as a “suspected technical issue” and adverse weather.
The aircraft, reportedly carrying several MPs including Venugopal, departed Thiruvananthapuram around 8 p.m. and landed in Chennai at about 10:35 p.m., according to flight-tracking data.
Following Venugopal's post on X, Air India, in a statement, informed that the diversion was purely precautionary and that the aircraft landed safely before being sent for checks.
However, Venugopal, speaking to reporters on Monday morning, claimed the pilot had announced that another aircraft was on the runway as they attempted to land, calling the experience “frighteningly close to tragedy.”
He stated, "There should be an inquiry into the issue. An unfortunate incident happened yesterday. It was announced by the pilot that there was another aircraft on the runway when we were going to land."
"I spoke to DGCA as well. Let them have an inquiry. Air India is lying", further noted the Congress leader.
