Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday asked women across the country to shop "more and more" from September 22, when revised GST rates would come into effect with their reduced margins.
Amit Shah said, "Diwali and Navratri will be coming soon. Everything you use will now have a GST of 0 per cent and 5 per cent instead of 28 per cent and 18 per cent. I want to tell the mothers and sisters of Delhi to do dadagiri (be the boss) at home and start shopping more and more from 22 September."
Shah was speaking at an event after unveiling welfare schemes worth Rs 1,723 crore in Delhi on Wednesday, which also coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday.
Shah stressed on PM Modi's call for "vocal for local" and said, "Shop freely, but only buy things made in India, not outside. The time has come for every citizen of India to take a pledge to buy only what is made in our country."
"Promoting Swadeshi should become our nature. Only then will the resolution of a prosperous India be fulfilled, Shah added during the event.
Earlier this month, during the GST Council meeting, the GST 2.0 reforms were cleared and a simplified tax structure was proposed. This included two slabs of 5 per cent and 18 per cent for most goods and services and a 40 per cent demerit rate that has been reserved only for luxury and "sin" goods.
As far as the average consumer is concerned, the new GST rules mean that most everyday essentials that earlier came under 12 or 18 per cent GST are now down to only 5 per cent.
Meanwhile, beauty and wellness services such as gyms, salons, barbers, as well as yoga centres will now be taxed at 5 per cent instead of 18 per cent. Also, all white goods that will include air conditioners, TVs and dishwashers will also be getting cheaper.
