Motorists are on a joyride on Delhi roads as the state has halved the fines for violating traffic rules as part of a broader effort to improve vehicle movement in the city and speed up the penalty settlement process.
Under the new policy, commuters can now compound certain traffic offences at half the original challan amount. This applies to existing challans issued within 90 days of the notification and new challans issued within 30 days. Offences covered include driving without a valid licence, dangerous driving, and operating uninsured vehicles.
To further streamline the process, the government has empowered the Assistant Traffic Inspectors (ATIs) of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and certain police officers to compound traffic fines. This delegation of authority aims to reduce the workload on the transport department and enhance on-ground enforcement, particularly in bus bays.
Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said the rationalisation of fines and delegation of enforcement powers would ensure smoother public transportat and safer roads. The move is in line with the government's broader efforts to improve traffic regulation and enhance public safety.
The minister announced that a proposal has been submitted to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, awaiting his approval.
By empowering ATIs, who are present during operational hours in bus lanes, the government aims to provide real-time enforcement, benefiting the city's transport system and commuters.
