Coronavirus Omicron India LIVE Updates | US hardens COVID-19 infection controls at bases in Japan as cases surge
U.S. military bases in Japan introduced stricter COVID-19 measures on Thursday after the host government expressed grave concern about a surge of new infections and called for restrictions on the movement of U.S. personnel. Three prefectures that host U.S. bases have requested quasi-emergency measures as Japan faces what some are calling a sixth wave of coronavirus infections, with cases in some places at their highest in months. One official has blamed U.S. military personnel for spreading the Omicron variant.
U.S. Forces Japan said that due to an increase in COVID-19 cases at installations and throughout Japan, it was establishing more stringent measures, including requiring personnel to wear masks off base and stricter testing. "The mitigation measures we have instituted...are intended to protect our force's readiness, the well-being of our families, and the health of Japan's citizens," the force said in a statement. "We recognise we all have a part to play in keeping our communities safe."
More than 100,000 U.S. service members, dependents and contractors are stationed in Japan. Earlier, Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi asked U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken for restrictions on U.S. service members from leaving their bases, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters. Matsuno said Japan was "gravely concerned" about COVID-19 infections at U.S. bases.
Nationwide, new infections surpassed 4,000 on Thursday, according to a tally by national broadcaster NHK, the most since Sept. 18. Tokyo reported 690 cases, up from 390 on Wednesday, and an expert panel said about 45% of infections in the capital were due to Omicron. Japan's total death toll from the pandemic stands at 18,397 people.
The southern prefecture of Okinawa, host to 70% of U.S. military facilities in Japan, is at the epicentre of Japan's latest surge of cases, and it asked the central government on Thursday to impose new restrictions, known as quasi-emergency measures, which were likely to include limiting the opening hours of restaurants and bars. Announcing the request, Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki said new cases there were expected to surge to about 980 on Thursday from 623 the day before.
Tamaki told reporters this week he was "furious" about what he called inadequate infection controls at U.S. bases that allowed the Omicron variant to spread to the public. The western prefectures of Hiroshima and Yamaguchi, which also host U.S. military facilities, said they would also request similar measures. Various levels of emergency controls had been in place over most of Japan last year until their lifting on Sept. 30.
Japan halted the entry of almost all foreign travellers in late November after the World Health Organization listed Omicron as a variant of concern. But the U.S. military moves staff in and out under a separate testing and quarantine regime. A U.S. Marine Corps station in Yamaguchi prefecture said on Thursday it discovered 115 new cases, after 182 announced the previous day.

Coronavirus Omicron India LIVE Updates | Sundance Film Festival 2022 to go virtual amid rising COVID-19 cases
The Sundance Film Festival has announced that it is moving forward with a virtual edition instead of the previously planned hybrid format due to the new COVID-19 variant Omicron. In a joint statement posted on the festival’s website, Joana Vicente, CEO, Sundance Institute, and Tabitha Jackson, Festival Director, said there was no option but to go digital given the rise in the cases.
"We have been looking forward to our first fully hybrid Sundance Film Festival and our teams have spent a year planning a festival like no other. But despite the most ambitious protocols, the Omicron variant with its unexpectedly high transmissibility rates is pushing the limits of health safety, travel and other infrastructures across the country.
"And so, today we’re announcing: the Festival’s in-person Utah elements will be moving online this year," the statement read. The organisers, however, assured that audiences will still "experience the magic and energy" of the gala with bold new films and discover new storytellers as well as connect with artists in the virtual format.
"While it is a deep loss to not have the in-person experience in Utah, we do not believe it is safe nor feasible to gather thousands of artists, audiences, employees, volunteers, and partners from around the world, for an eleven-day festival while overwhelmed communities are already struggling to provide essential services," the statement further read.
The team said going virtual was "a difficult decision to make" but expressed hope that the 11-day-long festival, beginning January 20, will take place as per schedule. The festival is presented by Sundance Organisation, a nonprofit that discovers and supports independent artists, and introduces audiences to their work.

Coronavirus Omicron India LIVE Updates | Omicron surge: Centre asks 9 states, union territories to step up testing
Underlining the highly transmissible nature of Omicron and the preponderance of asymptomatic cases, the Centre has urged nine states and union territories to ramp up COVID-19 testing to ensure that infected people do not spread the virus to others. In a letter to Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Jammu and Kashmir and Bihar, Additional Secretary of Union Health Ministry Arti Ahuja pointed out a considerable decline in COVID-19 testing amid rising cases and positivity rate and said it is a "cause of concern".
In the absence of sufficient testing, it is rather impossible to determine the true level of infection spread in the community, Ahuja said in her letter dated January 5. "With the increased detection of the Variant of Concern (VOC), Omicron, and a majority of countries seeing multiple surges in cases despite high levels of vaccination, there is a need for continued vigil and efforts to prevent any deterioration of the COVID-19 scenario.
"Keeping in mind the unpredictable and highly transmissible behaviour of Omicron and the larger preponderance of asymptomatic cases, ramping up testing in the initial days itself will help to ensure that the infected individual does not spread the virus to others," she said. It has been observed that there has been a considerable decline in COVID-19 testing in these states and union territories amid rising cases and positivity, which is a cause of concern, Ahuja said.
She advised them to review and ensure availability of sufficient stock of testing reagents and kits etc., and regular arrangement of testing facilities, consumables, and logistics. India on Thursday saw the biggest single-day jump of 495 Omicron cases, taking the total number of infections of the new variant of coronavirus to 2,630, according to Union health ministry data.

Coronavirus Omicron India LIVE Updates | Grammy Awards indefinitely postponed, Sundance to go virtual amid Omicron surge
The Grammy music awards and the renowned Sundance film festival fell victim Wednesday to Omicron's relentless march, as the variant's surge gathered pace in Europe. Citing "uncertainty" surrounding the new coronavirus variant, the Recording Academy indefinitely postponed the Grammy Awards, while Sundance Film Festival organizers said the festival would go virtual with infection numbers reaching new highs.
The heavily mutated Omicron variant, the most transmissible to date, accounted for around 95 percent of US cases in the week ending January 1. According to the latest CDC figures cases stateside are running at nearly 500,000 a day, with new hospitalizations rising. And in the UK, official data shows one in 15 people in England were infected with the virus in 2021's final week.
But Prime Minister Boris Johnson said travel curbs beefed up last month to contain the new strain were now ineffective, and his government scrapped the need for visitors to have pre-departure tests and quarantine on arrival until testing negative. Italy's government, meanwhile, said Wednesday it would make vaccination against COVID-19 compulsory from February 15 for everyone over the age of 50 -- nearly half of its population -- in its bid to battle surging infections.
The new decree obliges people over 50 who do not work to get vaccinated, and those who do work to obtain a vaccine pass -- which effectively covers all over-50s. France on Wednesday set a record for new Covid cases over a 24-hour period, according to the latest official figures, with more than 332,000 additional infections recorded. It was the first time that French cases breached 300,000, smashing the previous record established on Tuesday when 271,686 new Covid cases were recorded.
The government is currently debating replacing the current health pass -- which contains proof of vaccination, a negative test or recent recovery -- with a "vaccine pass" for which only people with full vaccination qualify. President Emmanuel Macron has warned the government would squeeze those who continued to refuse Covid shots. "As for the non-vaccinated, I really want to piss them off," he said. Around five million people in France remain unvaccinated.

Coronavirus Omicron India LIVE Updates | Bihar man claims to have got 12 Covid jabs, says made him "feel better": Report
An 84-year-old man in north Bihar's Madhepura district has caused a flutter with the claim that he has taken a dozen shots of the COVID-19 vaccine since every jab made him "feel better". Brahmadeo Mandal lives in a village in Udakishanganj sub-division of Madhepura and claimed to have taken his 12th dose a few days ago.
"I have used my Aadhar card and my voter ID card on different occasions to get myself registered," said Mandal who is a retired postal department employee. "Every single dose (of COVID-19 vaccine) has helped relieve my chronic back pain. I have never caught cold since I took the first shot 11 months ago," the Bihar resident said, reading out date, time and site of each jab scribbled on a piece of paper.
Oddly, Mandal is not in possession of any system-generated vaccination certificate for these. With the matter appearing in a section of the press, bewildered health officials have ordered a probe. "It needs to be found out whether the man is bloviating or his claims have a modicum of truth," said district civil surgeon Amarendra Narayan Shahi. He said that as per rules, no person was supposed to be administered more than two doses.
"If his claim turns out to be true, officials concerned will face action. He may also end up facing the music for getting jabbed so many times knowingly and willingly," said the civil surgeon.

Coronavirus Omicron India LIVE Updates | COVID-19 surge has not yet dented domestic travel plans: Cleartrip CEO Ayyappan Rajagopal
The surge in COVID-19 cases, driven by the new Omicron variant, has not dented overall demand for tickets during the busy winter travel season, according to Cleartrip Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ayyappan Rajagopal. In talks with CNBC-TV18, Rajagopal said there used to be around 4.2 lakh travellers in November and December before the COVID-19 outbreak. In the same period in 2021, it was around 3.35 lakh - almost 85 percent of the pre-pandemic time, he said.
Talking about the impact of surging Omicron variant of novel coronavirus infection on the travelers, the CEO said the numbers have still not crashed. “If we talk about domestic travelers, the bookings that they are doing at this point of time is a lot more for the near term rather than planning for two-three months ahead,” he said.
Even international travelers are still thinking about carrying on with their plans. They are not postponing or cancelling their travels. They are going ahead, but it is most dependent on whether the airlines are operating, or the government coming up with new restrictions, he said. “So, largely, the numbers have remained at par with what November and December saw. We saw a huge uptick in the two months in domestic travelers. The New Year saw a dip but it has been broadly flat,” he said.
The search trends have gone down 15-20 percent Month-on-Month, Rajagopal shared. “People mostly search when they are still not clear, whereas direct booking happens when people are clear about their travel plans. At present, bookings are a lot more for the near term than two-three months into the future,” he added. India has seen a massive surge in new COVID-19 cases as it reported 90,928 fresh infections in the 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry’s data updated on January 6 at 8 am . On the previous day, there were 58,097 fresh cases reported.
