Coronavirus News highlights: Today is the 124th day since India implemented a nationwide lockdown, to help curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. So far, India has recorded 13,36,861 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 31,358 deaths, according to news agency PTI. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Karnataka have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are rising rapidly in states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Assam. Yet, India’s recovery rate continues to rise and now stands at 63.5 percent.
Globally, there have been over 1.56 crore confirmed cases of COVID-19. More than 6.38 lakh people have died so far. Catch the highlights here:

Meghalaya's COVID-19 tally mounted to 646 on Saturday after 59 more people, including six BSF staffers and four police personnel, tested positive for coronavirus, officials said.
The BSF and police personnel are from East Khasi Hills and East Jaintia Hills districts respectively.
While 94 patients have recovered from the disease in the state, five others died.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in central police forces under the command of the Union home ministry crossed the 10,000-mark on Saturday with 421 fresh cases being reported in a day, a latest data said.
The cases pertain to the seven forces of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
The maximum cases of 3,341 have been recorded in the CRPF, the country's largest paramilitary force with about 3.25 lakh personnel.

The 2-day 'Janta curfew' in Nagpur in Maharashtra began on Saturday with people showing good levels of compliance, with only establishments dealing in essential items remaining open as permitted, said officials.
The decision to implement the Janta curfew (voluntary shutdown) was taken in a meeting on Friday which was attended by Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, Mayor Sandip Joshi and other elected representatives and officials.
Some 3,000 police personnel were deployed on the streets of Nagpur city to enforce the curfew, they added.

Supporting people to move towards and maintain a healthier weight may reduce the serious effects of COVID-19, UK experts have concluded in a new report released on Saturday.
Public Health England (PHE), the executive body linked to the government's Department of Health, conclude in their findings that being obese or excessively overweight increases the risk of severe illness and death from the novel coronavirus.
The report summarises findings from evidence published during the pandemic on the effects of excess weight and obesity on COVID-19. PHE notes that UK and international evidence suggests that being severely overweight puts people at greater risk of hospitalisation, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission and death from COVID-19, with risk growing substantially as body mass index (BMI) increases.

Import licenses for rapid diagnostic kits of 3 firms cancelled, 16 suspended by DCGI
India's drug regulator has cancelled the rapid diagnostic kit import licenses of three firms and suspended that of 16 others saying the USFDA has removed the manufacturers from their list of coronavirus serology test kits with directions that they should not be distributed.
The three firms are Cadila Healthcare, MDAAC International and N W Overseas while the 16 companies include Transasia Bio-Medicals, Cosmic Scientific, Inbios India, S D Biosensor, Accurex Biomedicals, Biohouse Solutions and Trivitron Healthcare among others.
The companies were issued a show cause notices on July 17 asking why their import licenses shall not be cancelled since the diagnostic kits of the manufacturers have been removed by USFDA with direction that it should not be distributed from the list of product of serology test kits for COVID-19 disease, according to an official order by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI).

Scientists identify 21 existing drugs that block coronavirus in lab studies
Scientists, including those of Indian-origin, have identified 21 existing drugs that stop the replication of the novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19 in lab studies, an advance that may lead to the development of new therapeutic combinations against the disease.
The researchers, including those from the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in the US, analysed one of the world's largest collections of known drugs for their ability to block the replication of the novel coronavirus, and found 100 molecules with confirmed antiviral activity in laboratory tests.
