India's novel coronavirus tally crossed the 22 lakh-mark with 53,601 fresh COVID-19 cases and 871 deaths. At present, there are 6,39,929 active cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the total coronavirus cases now stands at 22,15,074. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are rising rapidly in states like Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. 'Unlock 3.0' is underway. Globally, the confirmed number of coronavirus cases has reached 20 million, according to the tally kept by Johns Hopkins University.
However, health officials believe the actual number is much higher, given testing limitations and the fact that as many as 40 percent of all those who are infected have no symptoms.

With 1,140 patients getting discharged in the day, the number of recoveries mounted to 56,416, the department said in a release.
At 41,647, the department conducted the highest number of tests in a day so far, which comes at 640.72 tests per day per million, it said.

Authorities in China have found the novel coronavirus on the packaging of imported frozen seafood that arrived from the port city of Dalian, which recently battled a surge of cases, a local government said on Tuesday. The virus was found on the outer packaging of frozen seafood bought by three companies in Yantai, a port city in eastern Shandong province.
The Yantai city government said in a statement the seafood was from an imported shipment that landed at Dalian but did not say where it originated. In July, customs officers in Dalian, a major port in the northeastern province of Liaoning, found the coronavirus in the packaging of frozen shrimps imported from Ecuador, and China then suspended imports from three Ecuadorean shrimp producers. UK suffers biggest job losses since 2009 as COVID hits
The number of people in work in Britain fell by 2,20,000 in the three months to June, the most since 2009, as the coronavirus crisis hammered the number of self-employed, Office for National Statistics said. The number of self-employed people fell by a record amount, led by older workers, while the number of employees rose.
Job losses are expected to rise as Britain winds down its huge job retention scheme which protects employees. It is due to close at the end of October. British finance minister Rishi Sunak said the figures showed the government's support programmes were working but job losses were inevitable. "I've always been clear that we can't protect every job, but through our Plan for Jobs we have a clear plan to protect, support and create jobs to ensure that nobody is left without hope," he said in a statement. Bhutan ordered its first nationwide lockdown on August 11 after a returning resident tested positive for coronavirus after being discharged from quarantine and coming into close contact with people in the capital Thimphu. The case took the total in the tiny Himalayan kingdom to 113, still the lowest in South Asia, and it has yet to record a fatality.
Bhutan, which is heavily reliant on high-end tourists, banned tourism in March after an American visitor tested positive for the virus, and ordered a three week mandatory quarantine for everyone returning from abroad. The lockdown was ordered after a 27-year-old Bhutanese woman, who returned came from Kuwait and was discharged from quarantine after testing negative, tested positive at a clinic on Monday. (Reuters)

Telangana coronavirus update: Telangana clocks 1,896 fresh COVID-19 cases, eight deaths
Telangana recorded an addition of1,896 new COVID-19 cases and eight more fatalities, pushing the total infection tally in the state to 82,647. The declining trend in fresh coronavirus cases continued in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), withonly 338 new cases being reported, a state government bulletinsaid on Tuesday, providing data as of 8 PM on August 10.
According to the bulletin, the case fatality rate in thestate was 0.78 per cent, while it was 2.0 per cent at thenational level. The total number of people who recovered from theinfectious disease so far was 59,374, while 22,628 were under treatment. (PTI)
