Masks could cut COVID-19 deaths in the US by 130,000: Study
Even if state-level governments in the United States reimpose limited social distancing measures to halt the spread of COVID-19, the death toll could more than double by the end of February 2021 to 511,000, according to projections released Friday.
Near-universal mask wearing over the coming months could reduce that grim tally by nearly 130,000, researchers from the COVID-19 forecasting team at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) found.
Even if mask compliance was only 85 percent, the number of lives saved compared to that baseline would still top 95,000, they reported in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Medicine.

COVID-19 lockdown reduced sleep quality, mental health, says study
The initial phase of the COVID-19 lockdown, which was imposed through March and April in several countries, may have dramatically altered people's personal eating and sleeping habits, according to a new study based on a first-of-its-kind global survey.
The study, published in the journal Obesity, evaluated the inadvertent changes in health behaviours that took place under the pandemic's widespread restrictions.
"The stay-at-home orders did result in one major health positive. Overall, healthy eating increased because we ate out less frequently. However, we snacked more. We got less exercise. We went to bed later and slept more poorly. Our anxiety levels doubled," said study co-author Leanne Redman from Louisiana State University.

Convalescent plasma therapy, which uses the blood of recovered COVID-19 patients as a potential treatment, has shown limited effect in reducing the progression to severe disease or death in a trial conducted in India, scientists say.
The study, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) involved 464 adults with moderate COVID-19 who were admitted to hospitals in India between April and July.
As many as 239 adult patients received two transfusions of convalescent plasma, 24 hours apart, alongside standard care, while the control group comprising of 229 patients received standard care only.
One month later, 44 patients or 19 percent of those who received the plasma had progressed to severe disease or had died of any cause, compared with 41 patients or 18 per cent in the control group.

Singapore and Germany have agreed to establish a reciprocal green lane, allowing direct flights between the two countries for essential business and official purposes.

Germany's disease control center says the number of new daily coronavirus cases remains near a record high, as the pandemic continues to spread.
The Robert Koch Institute said Friday that 11,242 new cases were reported over the last 24-hour period, just shy of the record 11,278 mark set the day before. The nationwide infection rate over the last seven days rose to 60.3 cases per 100,000 residents, up from 56.2 the day before.
Some hot spots, like the capital, are much higher than that, with Berlin reporting a rate of 110.6 cases per 100,000 residents, with the district of Neukoelln at more than double that with a rate of 236.7 per 100,000.
