Cloudburst hits Amarnath cave area; death toll rises to 16, 15,000 stranded pilgrims evacuated

At least 16 people have been killed while 15,000 pilgrims, who were stranded near the Amarnath holy cave in Jammu and Kashmir due to a flash flood triggered by the cloudburst, have been rescued

A cloudburst hit near the base camp of the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas on July 8, officials said. The cloudburst hit the cave area at around 5.30 pm after heavy rains, they said.

Police and other civil administration launched a rescue operation as some langars were affected by the gushing waters, the officials said.

At least 16 people have been killed while 15,000 pilgrims, who were stranded near the Amarnath holy cave in Jammu and Kashmir due to a flash flood triggered by the cloudburst, have been shifted to the lower base camp of Panjtarni, officials confirmed on Saturday.

A Border Security Force spokesperson in Delhi said "16 bodies have been shifted to Baltal." The ITBP has expanded its route opening and protection parties from the lower part of the holy cave up to Panjtarni, a spokesperson of the force said.
