A troubling road incident involving Punjab Police escort vehicles has come to light after a retired senior army officer shared his experience on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.
Lieutenant General D S Hooda (Retd), who previously served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army's Northern Command, reported that his vehicle was deliberately struck by a police escort jeep on the Zirakpur flyover at approximately 4 pm while he was driving with his wife.
According to Lt Gen Hooda's account, two Punjab Police jeeps were escorting a VIP towards Ambala when they approached from behind with sirens activated. The retired general stated he slowed his vehicle to allow the convoy to pass through the heavy traffic on the busy flyover.
The incident occurred when the VIP vehicle took what Lt Gen Hooda described as "three additional seconds to pass because there was heavy traffic." The rear escort jeep, apparently angered by the brief delay, overtook from the left side and then sharply cut to the right, striking the front of his car before speeding away without stopping.
"It was clearly a deliberate act, not only damaging the car, but with no concern of our personal safety on a very crowded road," Lt Gen Hooda wrote in his social media post.
The retired general expressed strong criticism of the incident, stating, "The arrogance and impunity of someone who is supposed to be a guardian of law soils the uniform and reputation of the organisation." He also tagged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Director General of Punjab Police in his post, seeking their attention to the matter.
Lt Gen Hooda is widely known for overseeing the 2016 surgical strikes across the Line of Control following the Uri attack.
