Citing safety concerns over potential violent protests, the Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Centre has cancelled a Life Certificate Event.
The consular camp was scheduled to take place on November 17 where Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs could renew essential life certificates.
The Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Centre serves as a spiritual hub for Hindus and like-minded individuals, offering a space for Puja, Kirtan, Sewa, and Pravachan.
“Please be advised that the Life Certificate Event scheduled at Brampton Triveni Mandir by the Indian Consulate on November 17, 2024, has been cancelled. This is due to official intelligence from Peel Regional Police, stating that there is an Extremely High and Imminent Threat Level of violent protests,” read the statement by the community centre.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Canada expressed their dismay on social media, questioning the police’s capacity or willingness to safeguard Hindu temples. The group stated on X, “Shocked to see that @PeelPolice @OntarioPolice are not able to offer appropriate protection to Hindu Temples in Ontario. Or is it they are succumbing to pressures from the Khalistani ecosystem? No wonder most Canadian Hindus are not feeling safe in the country and rate Law Enforcement's handling of recent hate & violent protests at Hindu mandirs as poor or very poor.”
On November 4, a pro-Khalistani mob staged a demonstration near the temple to mark the 40th anniversary of the Sikh riots. They attacked several Hindu devotees at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton.
Reacting to the incidents, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack on the Hindu temple and criticized attempts to intimidate Indian diplomats.
"I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats," he said.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the violence, stressing that all Canadians have a right to practice their faith safely.
