Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is set to visit India next month, where she is likely to meet External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar, according to a report by Bloomberg.
This will be the first visit the foreign ministers of any country will be visiting the other since India-China ties strained in 2023 after the previous Justin Trudeau government in Ottawa accused New Delhi of being involved in assassination plots against Sikh separatist leaders on Canadian soil. The allegation was strongly denied as malicious by the Indian government.
The official dates of the meeting have not been announced yet.
This comes after the breakthrough in Modi-Carney meeting on the margins of the G7 Summit in Canada led to the return of the high commissioners to each other's capital earlier this month. In August, India and Canada announced new high commissioners to each other’s countries.
India’s foreign ministry and Global Affairs Canada in talks last week reaffirmed the importance of India–Canada ties, anchored in “shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity", according to a report by The Times of India.
They also agreed to resume bilateral dialogue across key sectors like trade, defence, energy, civil nuclear, security, law enforcement and critical minerals. Amid global uncertainties that have been exacerbated by the US tariff policy, both sides seem keen to expand their economic partnership and build upon people-to-people contacts.
