An 18-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting an 11-year-old girl at a madrasa in Thanisandra, Bengaluru, following a minor altercation over spilled rice.
The Times of India reported that around 200 children study in the madrasa, and the accused has been identified as M Mohammed Hassan, the son of the in-charge of the religious institution.
According to police, the girl had been staying at the madrasa since July 2024, while her parents lived in Yeshwantpur. The incident that happened on February 16 came to light two days later when a staff member informed the girl’s mother about the alleged assault.
The mother immediately rushed to the madrasa, only to find Hassan missing from the premises.
In her complaint, the girl’s mother told police that a group of children had accidentally spilled rice on the floor while playing. Hassan, enraged by the mess, ordered them to clean it up. When he asked her daughter why she wasn’t helping, she responded that she had not spilled the rice. Angered by her reply, Hassan allegedly beat her and kicked her.
The accused's mother initially denied the allegations. However, she played the CCTV footage of the madrasa that allegedly confirmed the assault. The girl’s father immediately reached out to the Kothanur police, leading to Hassan’s arrest.
The accused was booked under the Juvenile Justice Act and sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 115 for voluntarily causing hurt.
"After keeping Hassan in custody for a day and completing formalities, including spot mahajar (on-site investigation), we produced him before the court. The court has since remanded him to judicial custody," an investigating officer said.
The girl’s parents have demanded strict action against the accused, expressing concerns about the safety of children at the madrasa.
