Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh on August 12 slammed the Central government for passing the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 without a proper discussion on its key features.
The Congress MP also alleged that the cricket’s national body BCCI is getting the most favoured treatment in the bill.
Ramesh said his party colleague Digvijay Singh, who is the Parliament Standing Committee chairman for education, women, youth and sports, had written to the Lok Sabha speaker to refer the bill to the panel for a “deeper examination”.
“However, the Modi govt - as has happened so very frequently in the past - ignored this perfectly legitimate request,” he said in a post on X.
“The Bill will result in the extreme centralisation of sports administration. And, of course, the BCCI will get most favoured treatment, not subject to any laws of the land like the RTI.”
On August 11, most Opposition members were on a protest march from Parliament to the Election Commission’s office in New Delhi. However, the Lok Sabha continued to function and key bills such as the new Income-Tax Bill and the National Sports Governance Bill were passed without the participation of several house members.
