RJD chief Lalu Prasad and his family have been central to the political landscape. In the 2025 Bihar assembly election, RJD won just 25 of the 145 odd seats it contested. The day after the debacle, came the tremors in RJD. Lalu’s daughter Rohini Acharya announced that she was “quitting” politics and severing ties with her family.
Amid the ongoing family, here's all you need to know about the prominent Bihar politician's key family members.
Lalu and Rabri Devi were married on June 1, 1973. It was an arranged marriage. At the time of their wedding, Lalu Yadav was 25 years old and Rabri Devi was 14. The couple raised nine children, seven daughters and two sons.
Misa Bharti: The eldest daughter of the couple was born in Patna in 1976. Lalu was detained during the Emergency in India from 1975 to 1977. Since Lalu was imprisoned during her birth, he named her after the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). Armed with an MBBS degree, Misha Bharti (49) helped her mother in running the government after Lalu was imprisoned in 1998. Married to computer engineer Shailesh Kumar, she made an official appearance in 2014 and contested the election for Pataliputra constituency but lost to Ram Kripal Yadav of the BJP. She also contested and won from the Pataliputra seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Chanda Singh: She is a law graduate who has maintained a low profile, largely staying out of the public eye except for family events. She is married to pilot Vikram Singh.
Ragini Yadav: She got enrolled in the Birla Institute of Technology in Ranchi under chief ministerial quota but did not complete her degree. She is married to Rahul Singh who is involved with the Samajwadi Party. The two have a son.
Hema Yadav: She is believed to have a BTech background, is married to Tej Yadav and remains largely out of public view.
Anushka “Dhannu” Rao: She is an interior designer who also has possibly studied law. She got married to Haryana Power Minister Ajay Singh Yadav's son Chiranjeev Rao.
Raj Lakshmi: Lalu’s youngest daughter, Raj Lakshmi, is an engineering graduate, She is married to Tej Pratap Singh Yadav, the grand nephew of the late Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Tej Pratap Yadav: Born on 16 April 1988 in Gopalganj, Tej Pratap Yadav completed his class 12 in 2010. Tej Pratap's (37) political career began in 2015, representing the Mahua constituency. In 2025, Lalu expelled him from both the family and the RJD, citing “irresponsible behaviour.”
Tejashwi Prasad Yadav: He was the CM face of the Mahagathbandhan. Tejashwi (35) has emerged as Lalu’s political successor. Despite leaving formal education after Class 12, he rose swiftly to serve as Bihar’s deputy chief minister. Married to Rajshree Yadav, he is also the father of two children.
Tej Pratap has come out strongly in Rohini’s support, saying her treatment was unacceptable.
