A 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped by three individuals on the outskirts of Pune, while her male companion was assaulted during the incident, police reported on October 4.
The alleged gang rape took place in the Bopdev Ghar area around 11 PM on October 3. According to the Kondhwa police cited by PTI, the victim and her male friend had travelled to the locality when the incident occurred. A senior official from Pune police stated, “Preliminary details suggest that the woman and her male friend were at Bopdev Ghar late Thursday night when they were attacked by three unknown assailants.”
Speaking to ANI, Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Joint CP Pune City Police said, "Yesterday night a 21-year-old woman went to Bopdev Ghat with friends...While she was with friends three unknown people came to them and beat them...Later they gang-raped the woman...We got this information at around 5 am today...Special teams were deployed for the hunt of the accused...Friends were tied with a cloth while the accused were raping the girl...The girl is in the hospital...She is under treatment...She is conscious...We are in the process of taking the statement of the girl. More than 10 teams deployed for the search of the accused..."
In response to the incident, ten police teams have been established to locate the perpetrators. An official from the Kondhwa police station confirmed that the assault occurred in an isolated area, where the trio not only raped the woman but also assaulted her male friend.
The incident has sparked outrage and concerns regarding women's safety in the region. NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar commented on the situation, told ANI, "The government started the Ladki Behan Yojana to help women. Women are benefiting from this. On one hand, there is the Ladki Behan Yojana and on the other hand, there are atrocities on women. On one hand, there is an attempt to provide financial assistance to women through the Ladki Behan Yojana and on the other hand, there is a lot of anger among the people due to the increasing atrocities on women."
The police have urged the public to come forward with any information that may assist in the investigation.
