Activist Gulfisha Fatima has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court order that rejected her bail plea in the "larger conspiracy" case linked to the February 2020 riots in Delhi.

On September 2, the high court denied bail to Fatima along with eight others, including Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, in the same case. The court had observed that "conspiratorial" violence under the garb of demonstrations or protests by citizens cannot be allowed.

Sharjeel Imam also moved the Supreme Court on Saturday against the high court’s refusal to grant him bail.

A division bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur had dismissed the bail applications of Fatima, Imam, Khalid, Mohd Saleem Khan, Shifa Ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Meeran Haider, and Abdul Khalid Saifi, stating that while the Constitution grants citizens the right to protest and hold demonstrations or agitations, such activities must remain orderly, peaceful and without arms and conducted within the bounds of law.
