Opening batter Shubman Gill was appointed the new captain of Gujarat Titans for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Monday, after all rounder Hardik Pandya was traded to his former franchise Mumbai Indians.
The announcement was made by the franchise on their X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday.
Gill, who started his IPL career with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018, was brought by the franchise in 2021 for a sum of Rs 7 crore. The batter has become one of the lynchpins of the side, often giving them blistering starts to set the tone of the innings.
He has also shown an appetite for big scores, having made three centuries in the 2023 IPL for the franchise.
“Shubman Gill has shown growth in stature and standing over the last two years at the highest level of the game. We’ve seen him mature not only as a batter but also as a leader in cricket. His contribution on the field has helped Gujarat Titans emerge as a formidable force, guiding the team through a successful campaign in 2022 and a strong run in 2023," Titans Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki said in a statement released on Monday.
"His maturity and skill is evident in his on-field performance and we are extremely excited to embark on a new journey with a young leader like Shubman at the helm," the statement added.
Gill made 890 runs in 17 matches for the franchise in 2023 season and won the IPL title with the Titans in their inaugural season in 2022.
