India secured a dominant 60-run victory over Bangladesh in their only warm-up game at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Saturday.
It proved to be an excellent match practice for India, showcasing a comprehensive display of all-round cricket that will boost their confidence ahead of their first group league match against Ireland at the T20 World Cup on June 5. Setting a formidable target of 182, India put Bangladesh under pressure right from the start of their chase.
After choosing to bat first, Shoriful Islam struck early by dismissing Sanju Samson, who opened the innings but failed to make an impact. Rishabh Pant came at No. 3 and took the attack to the opposition. Making a comeback for India after a year-and-a-half, Pant displayed no signs of rust, aggressively attacking the Bangladesh bowlers.
Pant's explosive half-century featured his signature shots, while skipper Rohit Sharma made 23 before getting out. Suryakumar Yadav then took the crease, immediately finding his rhythm and forming a solid partnership with Pant, who retired to allow other batsmen a chance.
Shivam Dube attempted to accelerate but struggled to connect, managing only one six over wide long off before getting out for 14 runs off 16 balls. Surya also fell while trying to hit a big shot.
A major positive for India was Hardik Pandya's form. He hit three consecutive sixes off Tanvir Islam and played the shot of the match in the penultimate over, remaining unbeaten on 40. Pandya's performance underscored his capabilities in the national team.
Defending the target, India's new ball bowlers were on the money, utilising the swing effectively. Arshdeep Singh stood out, claiming two wickets inside the Powerplay. Bangladesh struggled to find their footing and were reduced to 41 for 5 in 8.2 overs.
Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad tried to revive the innings, putting together a 75-run partnership. Despite their efforts, Bangladesh remained on the back foot and ultimately fell short by 60 runs. Arshdeep Singh (2/12) and Shivam Dube (2/13) were the standout bowlers for India, as Rohit Sharma experimented with his bowling group.
