US President Donald Trump's chaotic trade policy has a new chapter in the making. After weeks of uncertainty over the tariff pause, Trump has said that as many as 14 nations will face levies of at least 25 percent from August 1 if these nations refuse to reach an agreement with the US. In a press conference, the White House unveiled the list, which included key American allies such as South Korea and Japan. Trump posted the letters on his social media platform, Truth Social. This could be a risky pivot for global trade, as nations scramble to reach a sustainable pact that also caters to their domestic interests.
Here's a look at the old threats vs newly-announcements:
| TRADING PARTNER | TRUMP’s OLD THREAT | NEW ANNOUNCEMENT |
| Japan | +24% | +25% |
| South Korea | +25% | +25% |
| Thailand | +36% | +36% |
| Malaysia | +24% | +25% |
| Indonesia | +32% | +32% |
| South Africa | +30% | +30% |
| Cambodia | +49% | +36% |
| Bangladesh | +37% | +35% |
| Kazakhstan | +27% | +25% |
| Tunisia | +28% | +25% |
| Serbia | +37% | +35% |
| Laos | +48% | +40% |
| Myanmar | +44% | +40% |
| Bosnia and Herzegovina | +35% | +30% |
The newly-announced tariffs are likely to replace the old levies that Trump had announced during the fancy White House ceremony in April in case these countries fail to reach a deal by August, the fresh deadline. While Trump was very vocal about how the new tariffs will unleash a new growth era for the US, the fact remains that the '90 deals in 90 days' campaign has seen little or no movement.
