Amit Banerji, founder, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Table Space, a workspace solutions provider, has passed away, the company said on January 6. The immediate cause of his death remains unknown, although a few media reports suspected he had a heart attack.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Amit Banerji, our Founder, Chairman, and CEO. Amit was a visionary leader who transformed the flexible workspace solution industry in India, Amit's leadership built Table Space into what it is today,” a company spokesperson said.
His impact on the company, its people and the industry will be lasting, and he will be profoundly missed by his family, friends and partners. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.”
Banerji, who was around 45-years-old, founded Table Space in September 2017. The company is a managed workspace provider that caters to large and mid-market tenants looking for workspaces for long periods.
A graduate of Punjab Technical University, Banerji did his B Tech in Computer Science between 1998 and 2002. He began his professional career at IT major Accenture in January 2004, where. He spent over 13 years at the firm, where he was responsible for overall real estate strategy, planning, acquisitions, deal structuring, finance, and operations.
The professional experience introduced him to the real estate world which helped in starting up Table Space. Banerji was building Table Space alongside seven fellow co-founders, including Vice-chairman and Chief Investment Officer Karan Chopra, President Kunal Mehra, and Chief Strategy Officer Srinivas Prasad, COO, Table Space Services CEO Krishnaswamy Nagarajan, and Table Space Constructions CEO Anurag Tyagi.
Other co-founders include Chief Sales Officer Nitish Bhasin, and Executive Director Sales Anamika Gupta.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Banerji specialised in SEZ deal structuring and has structured over ten million square feet of these deals. He was also a patent holder with inventions in Systems and technology integration.
Banerji’s sudden passing follows a series of tragic losses in the startup community.
Just over two weeks ago, Rohan Mirchandani, co-founder of renowned yogurt brand Epigamia, died of a heart attack on December 21 at age 41.
Earlier in the year, Rohan Malhotra, co-founder of venture capital firm Good Capital, passed away on October 1, and Ambareesh Murty, co-founder of Pepperfry, died of cardiac arrest during a biking trip in Leh in August.
Table Space, which is backed by global private equity fund Hillhouse Capital, was among the many startups looking to go public in 2025, eyeing a fundraise of more than Rs 3,500 crore and reportedly commanding a valuation of around $2.5 billion.
According to the Table Space website, the firm is a market leader in enterprise managed workspaces and works primarily with Fortune 500 companies like Google, Apple and Dell. Apart from leasing large spaces and modernising them, the company also ties up with Indian realtors for joint ventures to co-own commercial real estate.
