Food delivery platforms Swiggy and Zomato were temporarily offline for about half an hour on the evening of September 1 in parts of Delhi NCR, with Gurugram being the most affected area.
The disruption came as the city reeled under heavy rainfall that left several arterial stretches waterlogged and traffic paralysed.
Users in Gurugram were unable to place or track orders on the two apps during the outage, with both platforms showing restaurants as “temporarily unavailable.” Services were, however, restored shortly after.
Moneycontrol has sent detailed queries to Zomato and Swiggy, and the story will be updated once they respond.
The glitch coincided with a spell of intense rainfall that worsened flooding in Gurugram, a city that routinely struggles with waterlogging during monsoon. During the course of the day, long traffic jams were reported across NH8, Sohna, Badshapur, and Manesar, while several underpasses and low-lying areas were submerged.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for September 1, forecasting rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across Delhi NCR in the afternoon and evening. It has also issued a flood alert for the country's capital, and warned of another round of showers with thunder and lightning on September 3.
Waterlogging and congestion were also reported in Noida, Ghaziabad, and parts of Delhi, with commuters struggling to navigate flooded streets.
The temporary suspension of services comes at a time when food delivery apps usually witness a surge in orders during the festive season.
With demand expected to rise in the coming weeks, particularly around Dussehra and Diwali, even short outages highlight the operational challenges platforms face in maintaining uninterrupted services during periods of heavy rainfall and traffic disruptions.
