The Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI), the apex body of real estate developers, launched a Green India Council on June 13.
One of its key objectives will be to develop a CREDAI-owned green building certification system on lines of Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications.
Along with the Green India Council, the developers’ body launched a Skilling Council -- aimed at building a future-ready, environmentally conscious, and professionally equipped real estate sector.
Shekhar Patel, President CREDAI National, said that the Green India Council will roll out a CREDAI-developed green building certification system. It will be specifically target Tier-2 and Tier-3 city developers who often cannot afford IGBC, GRIHA, or LEED certifications.
“Our green certification will be cost-effective, aligned with national environmental priorities, and will incentivise developers to construct energy-efficient, sustainable projects. We are in discussions with the government for its approval. Once formalised, it will be rolled out nationally,” Patel told Moneycontrol.
CREDAI, which represents over 13,000 real estate developers across 20 states and 230 city chapters, has also announced a partnership with Adani Cement to champion sustainable and high-quality construction practices across the country.
These decisions were taken at the CREDAI Governing Council meeting, held in the presence of Goar Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the CREDAI leadership.
The developers’ body said that Adani Cement will provide GRIHA-certified products, including green concrete solutions, advanced additives, and technical services. This collaboration will empower CREDAI members to elevate construction quality, safety, and sustainability across projects nationwide.
Adani Cement will also offer on-site technical support and knowledge-sharing programmes to upskill engineers and construction professionals within the CREDAI network, the developers’ body said on June 13.
Vinod Bahety, CEO – Cement Business, Adani Group, stated that the partnership with CREDAI is a testament to Adani Cement’s commitment to nation-building through sustainable and innovative construction.
"By joining hands with CREDAI, we aim to accelerate the adoption of world-class cement products and green concrete solutions in India’s real estate sector. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our vision of building a greener, smarter urban future – one where Adani Cement’s technical expertise and CREDAI’s on-ground experience come together to create stronger, safer, and more sustainable structures," he said.
Green India Council and Skilling Council
The Green India Council is part of CREDAI’s sustainability agenda. The council will oversee a wide spectrum of green initiatives, including a large-scale reforestation initiative, starting with the restoration of 9,000 acres of land across various blocks of Nashik district in Maharashtra, aimed at converting barren landscapes through reforestation and significantly increasing the green cover.
Patel said that the initiative aims to plant over 10 lakh trees using scientific and community-based methods, reaffirming the real estate sector’s role as a steward of India’s environmental future.
The developers’ body said that the Skilling Council is aimed at creating a future-ready workforce. The first phase aims to train over 15,000 workers, with the rollout set for mid-July 2025.
With the goal of training a large number of workers over the next five years, the council will roll out targeted programmes across 25 cities, beginning with 16 key hubs, like Ahmedabad, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Noida, Mumbai, Nashik, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, Jaipur, Bhiwadi, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Raipur, CREDAI said.
