Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP), and former leader of the Samajwadi Party Amar Singh dies on August 1. He was 64.
Singh was admitted to a hospital for seven months. He was seeking treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
Amar Singh earlier underwent a kidney transplant. He had suffered kidney failure in 2013, News 18 reported.
Several political figures took to Twitter to pay condolences to the MP, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The former Samajwadi leader had posted messages on Twitter, paying tributes to Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his 100th death anniversary and also wishing people on Eid, shortly before his death on August 1.
According to an India Today report, Amar Singh stood out as a key figure during the election of Manmohan Singh. He had played an important role in bringing together the Congress and Samajwadi Party.
After nearly six years of being expelled from the Samajwadi Party and being in political exile for an even longer term, in 2016, Amar Singh got elected to the Rajya Sabha as an Independent candidate from Uttar Pradesh. This was only possible due to Mulayam Singh backing his candidature, the report said.
