Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to inaugurate the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi on February 14 evening, a project constructed by Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). Modi shares a profound and longstanding relationship with this organisation affiliated with the Swaminarayan sect and its revered saints. Notably, even the pen used by Modi to file his nomination during the Lok Sabha elections is a gift from the spiritual leader of this organisation.
Following his prominent role as the chief host during the consecration ceremony of the Ram Lalla temple at Ramjanmabhoomi in Ayodhya on January 22, PM Modi is slated to participate in the inauguration programme of another significant temple in Abu Dhabi today. The temple holds special significance as it is erected in a nation where Islam is the official religion. Situated in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, renowned globally for its prominent cities Abu Dhabi and Dubai, this temple stands as a testament to religious harmony and tolerance. PM Modi has played a key role in facilitating the construction of the temple and allocating land for its establishment.
BAPS Temple in UAE: A Landmark in Interfaith Relations
The decision by BAPS, an organisation affiliated with the Swaminarayan sect, to construct a temple in the UAE in 2014-15 marked a significant undertaking. Their discussions with the ruling family of the UAE were supported by PM Modi and his government, who played a crucial role in facilitating this initiative. The provision of land for the temple in the UAE, an Islamic country, was an unexpected development that underscores the importance of diplomatic efforts and cooperation in fostering cultural and religious harmony on a global scale.
The successful realisation of this mission can be attributed to the relentless dedication of the saints associated with BAPS and the cooperative efforts of the Modi government. The UAE government's allocation of land for the temple and its swift resolution of construction-related challenges show their commitment to facilitating the project. Additionally, the enactment of strict laws to safeguard the temple's future and ensure its security reflects a shared commitment to preserving religious and cultural heritage.
The completion of the first grand Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi within a record time frame of seven years is indeed a testament to the effective collaboration between BAPS, the UAE authorities, and the Indian government under the leadership of PM Modi.
Modi's Hands-On Diplomacy: Strengthening India-UAE Ties
PM Modi's proactive approach and personal involvement in addressing the needs and challenges encountered during the temple construction demonstrate his commitment to promoting cultural and religious ties between India and the UAE. His continuous engagement with BAPS officials and regular reviews of the construction progress underscored the significance of this project in strengthening bilateral relations.
Furthermore, the active participation of the ministry of external affairs (MEA) officials highlights the diplomatic efforts undertaken to facilitate the construction process and ensure its smooth execution. The successful completion of the temple reflects the collective dedication and cooperation of all stakeholders involved, paving the way for enhanced cultural exchange and mutual understanding between India and the UAE.
The development of PM Modi's relationship with BAPS can be traced back to several years ago, characterised by mutual respect and collaboration. The invitation card for the inauguration of the Abu Dhabi temple, with Modi's name inscribed as "Pramukh Swami's beloved son Modi Saheb," signifies the deep bond between Modi and the spiritual leaders of the Swaminarayan sect. This special designation reflects the reverence and affection with which Modi is regarded within the BAPS community, highlighting the personal connection and rapport he shares with the organisation's leaders. It is this close relationship that likely prompted Modi to extend his full cooperation and support to the construction of the temple in Abu Dhabi and to attend its inauguration ceremony.
Pramukh Swami: A Revered Spiritual Leader of BAPS and Global Figure
Pramukh Swami, originally known as Narayanswarup Das, was the fifth spiritual leader of BAPS. He gained widespread recognition not only within the Swaminarayan sect but also across India and globally. Das was born on December 7, 1921, and he embraced monkhood in the Swaminarayan sect in 1940. His appointment as the administrative head of the BAPS organisation by Shastriji Maharaj, the third spiritual leader of the organisation, on May 21, 1950, led to him being known as Pramukh Swami.
Akshar Brahma Gunatitanand Swami served as the chief disciple of Sahajanand Swami, also known as Lord Swaminarayan, who established the Swaminarayan sect in the late 18th century. Gunatitanand Swami played a pivotal role in disseminating the teachings of Lord Swaminarayan. His disciple, Bhagatji Maharaj, further propagated these teachings, and under his guidance, Shastriji Maharaj emerged. Shastriji Maharaj, in adherence to the guru-disciple tradition, established the BAPS organisation to propagate the principles of Lord Swaminarayan across India and globally.
This institution represented a departure from the family acharya tradition, which was characterised by narrow control over the sect's temples and activities by the ancestors of the acharya tradition. BAPS aimed to broaden the reach of Lord Swaminarayan's teachings beyond the confines of traditional structures, fostering a more inclusive approach to spirituality.
On November 12, 1905, Shastriji Maharaj, along with four companions and nearly 150 disciples, departed from the acharya tradition. They embarked on a new path, marking a significant departure from traditional structures. Shastriji Maharaj initiated the construction of the first temple in Bochasan, located in the Anand district of Gujarat. This temple became symbolic of the new direction taken by Shastriji Maharaj and his followers.
As a result, the institution came to be known as Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, reflecting its origins in Bochasan. Over time, this organisation gained widespread recognition and acclaim, eventually becoming known globally as BAPS. Today, BAPS is renowned for its spiritual and humanitarian endeavors around the world.
Following Shastriji Maharaj, Yogiji Maharaj assumed leadership within BAPS. After Yogiji Maharaj's passing, Pramukh Swami took over as both the administrative and spiritual head of the organisation in 1971. Under Pramukh Swami's guidance, BAPS expanded its activities globally, establishing magnificent temples in cities worldwide, ranging from Gandhinagar, Gujarat's capital, to London, New Jersey, and Toronto.
Pramukh Swami's remarkable contributions were recognised internationally, with his name being enshrined in the Guinness Book of World Records for overseeing the construction of the highest number of Hindu temples globally. Notably, the grand Akshardham temple on the banks of the Yamuna River in Delhi, stands as a testament to Pramukh Swami's inspiration and guidance, showcasing his vision for spiritual and architectural excellence.
Modi's Spiritual Journey: The Beginning of His Connection with Pramukh Swami
Modi's connection with Pramukh Swami Maharaj dates back to 1981. At that time, Modi had already established himself in Gujarat's social life as an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His deep reverence for sages and saints had been evident since childhood, and his spiritual quest led him to leave home in 1968 to pursue the path of a sanyasi. During his travels across the country, he visited temples and met with monks and nuns, seeking spiritual guidance.
Although Modi's initial aspirations for a life of renunciation were not fulfilled, he became a pracharak (campaigner) for the RSS in 1972, dedicating himself to social service. During the period of the Emergency in India, he played a significant role as the Gujarat convenor of the Lok Sangharsh Samiti, actively opposing the authoritarian regime. After the Emergency, Modi furthered his work within the RSS, particularly in central and south Gujarat, where he sharpened the organisation's activities.
In 1981, when Modi first met Pramukh Swami Maharaj, he was stationed in Ahmedabad, working as a department pracharak for the RSS in areas including Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, and Sabarkantha. Alongside his responsibilities within the RSS, Modi was also involved in various social projects in these regions.
Modi's introduction to Pramukh Swami occurred during the bicentenary birth celebrations of Lord Swaminarayan. The BAPS organization, under Pramukh Swami's leadership, had planned extensive festivities to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Lord Swaminarayan's birth in Ahmedabad. This event provided an opportunity for Modi to connect with Pramukh Swami and become acquainted with the work and ethos of the BAPS organisation.
Lord Swaminarayan, originally named Ghanshyam, was born in 1781 in the village of Chhapaiya in the Basti district of Uttar Pradesh. In his childhood, he embarked on a journey of spiritual exploration, leaving home at the age of 11. Over the course of seven years, he travelled extensively across the Indian subcontinent and came to be known as Neelkanth.
At the age of 18, Neelkanth arrived at the ashram of Ramanand Swami in Gujarat. Under the guidance and tutelage of Ramanand Swami, Neelkanth's spiritual journey deepened, and he was bestowed with the name Sahajanand Swami. Three years later, at the age of 21, Sahajanand Swami was appointed as Ramanand Swami's successor, marking a significant milestone in his spiritual path.
Sahajanand Swami, later known as Lord Swaminarayan, was a prominent spiritual leader who emphasised social reform, moral values, and spiritual upliftment. He advocated for various social reforms aimed at promoting a virtuous and ethical way of life among his followers. One of his key teachings was the Swaminarayan Mantra, which encapsulated principles of righteousness, devotion, and ethical conduct.
Throughout his teachings, Lord Swaminarayan stressed the importance of freedom from addictions and the cultivation of moral virtues. He encouraged his disciples to lead a life of integrity, honesty, and compassion towards all beings. His teachings were compiled into texts such as the Shikshapatri, which served as a guidebook for ethical conduct and spiritual practice for his followers.
The grand festival organized by Pramukh Swami Maharaj on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad in 1981 was a significant event that showcased the life and teachings of Lord Swaminarayan. This festival, held from March 7 to April 13, 1981, attracted thousands of devotees and prominent figures from social life who came to learn about the philosophy and activities of the Swaminarayan tradition.
The festival featured various exhibitions and presentations that depicted the life, teachings, and principles of Lord Swaminarayan. Through these exhibitions, attendees had the opportunity to gain insights into the spiritual legacy of Lord Swaminarayan and the mission of the BAPS in promoting his teachings.
The establishment of Swaminarayan Nagar on the banks of the Sabarmati River provided a sacred space for devotees to gather, reflect, and engage in spiritual practices. It served as a hub of religious and cultural activities, fostering a sense of community among followers of the Swaminarayan faith.
Overall, the grand festival organised by Pramukh Swami Maharaj was instrumental in disseminating the ideals of Lord Swaminarayan and showcasing the diverse activities undertaken by the BAPS for the spiritual upliftment of society.
Metaphor of Purpose: Pramukh Swami and Modi's Shared Vision of Service
The first meeting between Modi and Pramukh Swami Maharaj during the grand festival on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad was a significant moment that laid the foundation for their enduring relationship. As Modi sat near the feet of Pramukh Swami, he observed the lines on both their feet, prompting Pramukh Swami to remark on the similarity between them. This simple yet profound exchange symbolised their shared commitment to service and dedication to their respective missions.
Pramukh Swami's observation about their feet having similar lines served as a metaphor for their aligned purpose and shared vision of serving humanity. It reflected their mutual understanding of the importance of selfless service and tireless dedication to the welfare of others.
This initial interaction marked the beginning of a deep bond between Narendra Modi and Pramukh Swami Maharaj, characterised by mutual respect, admiration, and a shared commitment to philanthropy and spiritual values. Throughout their association, they continued to inspire each other and collaborate on various initiatives aimed at promoting social welfare and spiritual upliftment.
The profound connection between Narendra Modi and Pramukh Swami Maharaj was deeply rooted in mutual respect, admiration, and a shared commitment to spiritual and social values. From their first meeting in 1981, where Pramukh Swami's words resonated with Modi, a bond akin to father and son blossomed between them.
Fatherly Guidance: Pramukh Swami and Modi's Enduring Mentorship
Throughout his life, Pramukh Swami regarded Modi as his own son, offering guidance, support, and wisdom in times of need. Similarly, Modi held Pramukh Swami in high esteem, seeking his counsel and solace during various phases of his life, from his days as a preacher to his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Their relationship transcended mere mentorship; it was marked by a deep spiritual connection and a shared commitment to service and humanity. Pramukh Swami's influence on Modi's life and leadership style is evident in Modi's reverence for traditional values, community service, and spiritual grounding. This enduring bond between guru and disciple served as a source of strength and inspiration for both men, shaping their paths and leaving an indelible mark on their legacies.
Sahajanand Swami emphasised social reforms, advocating for freedom from addiction and the importance of living a moral life. He imparted the Swaminarayan Mantra as a guiding principle to all his disciples who were inspired by his teachings. As a result, Sahajanand Swami later became renowned as Lord Swaminarayan. His teachings and principles were documented in a book known as the Shikshapatri.
Pramukh Swami Maharaj, dedicated to spreading the teachings of Lord Swaminarayan through his organization BAPS, organised a grand festival on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad from March 7 to April 13, 1981. The festival showcased the life of Lord Swaminarayan through various exhibitions. In addition to presenting his ideas, information about the organisation's activities was also provided. An entire area named Swaminarayan Nagar was set up on the banks of the Sabarmati near Subhash Bridge Circle in Ahmedabad city. Thousands of devotees, along with prominent figures from social life, visited the festival daily.
In this series, Modi also attended the programme. It was during this event that the first meeting between Pramukh Swami and Modi took place. Modi was seated near the feet of Pramukh Swami. At times, Modi glanced at the lines on Pramukh Swami's feet, and at other times, at the lines on his own feet. Pramukh Swami noticed this and spontaneously remarked, "My feet also bear the same lines as your feet. We both have to serve until our last breath."
This sentiment from Pramukh Swami deeply touched Modi's heart. An instant bond was formed between them, akin to that of a father and son. Pramukh Swami regarded Modi as his son throughout his life, while Modi viewed Pramukh Swami as his mentor and father-like guru. Whenever Modi encountered difficulties, whether during his time as a preacher or even after assuming the role of CM of Gujarat, he would turn to Pramukh Swami for guidance. They would often communicate over the phone, with Pramukh Swami offering solutions to Modi's every problem.
Blessings Amid Challenges: Pramukh Swami's Support During Modi's Election Bid
When Modi went to contest elections in Rajkot for the first time in 2002, he sought blessings from Pramukh Swami before filing his nomination. Pramukh Swami sent a pen as a blessing, instructing Modi to fill out the nomination form with that pen. The challenge in Rajkot was formidable, with internal conflicts within the BJP and strong opposition from the Congress. However, Modi's diligent efforts paid off. Despite the BJP losing two assembly seats in the by-elections, Modi emerged victorious in the elections.
Since then, every time Modi filed his nomination, the pen came from Pramukh Swami. Even after becoming the BJP's prime ministerial candidate in 2014, when Modi filed nominations from both Vadodara and Varanasi, the pen was sent by Pramukh Swami. This tradition continued even after the passing of the revered spiritual leader. Pramukh Swami passed away on August 13, 2016. However, when Modi went to Varanasi to file his nomination again in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the pen was sent by Mahant Swami, who had succeeded Pramukh Swami as the spiritual head of BAPS.
Continuing Tradition: Pramukh Swami's Blessings for Modi Through Clothing
Another enduring tradition of Pramukh Swami blessing Modi continues to this day. When Modi was a Sangh pracharak and later when he became the general secretary of the Gujarat BJP, Pramukh Swami used to send him two sets of kurta and pyjaamas clothing every year. This tradition persisted even after Modi assumed the role of CM and later as Prime Minister. Even now, every year, as a blessing from BAPS, these two sets of clothing reach Modi's official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.
Modi's profound respect and love for Pramukh Swami were evident even when Pramukh Swami passed away. Pramukh Swami breathed his last at the Sarangpur temple in Gujarat's Botad district on August 13, 2016. Despite protocol dictating that Modi could not leave Delhi just before the Independence Day celebrations, Modi flew to Sarangpur on August 15, immediately after delivering his address as the PM from the ramparts of the Red Fort. It is a rare occurrence for the PM to leave Delhi on Independence Day.
For Modi, Pramukh Swami was like a father figure. After paying his homage to Pramukh Swami, Modi broke down in tears while addressing the Swamis and devotees present there. Modi expressed, "How life should be lived, what should be said, what should not be said, Pramukh Swami always guided me, he was like a father to me. He also watched the tapes of my speeches and gave appropriate advice." This heartfelt statement reflects the deep reverence and affection Modi held for Pramukh Swami.
Abu Dhabi Temple: A Testament to Pramukh Swami's Legacy and Modi's Commitment
The completion and inauguration of the Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, inspired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, exemplify the enduring legacy of his teachings and the collective efforts of those committed to his vision. As someone who shared a close bond with Pramukh Swami and was deeply influenced by his teachings, it is natural for Modi to support and participate in such initiatives that reflect the values and principles espoused by Pramukh Swami.
It is indeed a remarkable coincidence that a grand, traditional, pinnacled, stone-built temple would be constructed in Abu Dhabi, fulfilling a dream envisioned by Pramukh Swami during his visit to Bahrain in 1997. This dream was discussed with his devotees and fellow sadhus. Interestingly, this was the same year when Modi was solidifying his position as general secretary in the national unit of the BJP. Little did anyone know at that time that Modi would one day become the PM of India and would himself travel to Abu Dhabi to inaugurate the temple. This temple stands out as the only traditional stone-built temple in the entire Middle East and the Arab world, with the land for its construction generously provided free of cost by the Sultan.
The magnitude of change and the increased reverence for Indian values are remarkable. The completion of this grand temple signifies a significant shift, allowing millions of Hindus living in the UAE to worship in a space that truly reflects the classical Indian style. Instead of confined rooms or hall-like temples, worshippers will now have the opportunity to experience worship in a grand, traditional setting. The fact that this temple is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the Islamic country United Arab Emirates, adds to its significance and underscores the growing acceptance and respect for diverse cultural and religious practices globally.
